Bunny Fletcher speaks in such a familiar way towards me for a very good reason: she's my roommate. And the reason she's so sensitive about unicorns is because of the still painful memories she has of her childhood pet unicorn, which, after getting attacked by a rabid wolf, had to be put down. She shot him in the head herself - an event which turned out to be a defining moment in her life, and the first stage of her growing up and becoming a man. Nothing sinister about this at all.
